In New Jersey and New York, we all know how important it is to keep your chimney in working order for the winter.  There are some important facts to know about chimney cleaning. Freshly cut woods tend to build up creosote faster than hardwood Creosote is a carcinogen and it can be deadly. If you have a stove or fireplace insert, you will have to clean your chimney more often. The way you handle your fireplace also affects the cleanliness of it. The location of your chimney in your house and the construction of it make a big difference too. Both of these have an affect on how much creosote builds up.

A good rule of thumb is to not ever assume your chimney is functioning properly even if you rarely use it. Many problems can make your chimney a potential threat to your family and safety. Cracks, lightning strikes, daily use, moisture issues, and pests can cause big problems for your chimney.

The most important reason to clean your chimney is chimney-induced fires. Every year hundreds of houses burn down because of dirty chimneys. These are fires that could have been avoided. It is also possible that insurance companies won't pay your claim if they find you were negligent in maintaining your chimney.

What Do Our Chimney Sweeps Look For?

  • "Puffy" creosote, with rainbow colored streaks, that has expanded beyond creosote's normal form
  • Warped metal of the damper, metal smoke chamber, connector pipe or factory-built metal chimney
  • Cracked or collapsed flue tiles, or tiles with large chunks missing
  • Discolored and distorted rain cap
  • Creosote flakes and pieces found on the roof or ground
  • Roofing material damaged from hot creosote
  • Cracks in exterior masonry
  • Evidence of smoke escaping through mortar joints of masonry or tile liners

Chimney Liner Service

Even though you rarely see it and almost never think about it, your Chimney Liner is among the most important parts of your house. The chimney liner’s main function is to carry combustion gases safely out of your house, but it also protects your chimney and fireplace from water damage, minimizes cold air infiltration into your home, reduces operating expenses and helps to conserve fuel.

A properly installed and maintained chimney liner will last many years, but there may be times when you will find it advisable to replace your existing liner. You should have your entire chimney system inspected and cleaned at least once a year. Here are 5 reasons why you might need to replace your chimney liner:
  1. Dangerous Tar or Creosote inside your Chimney Flue's that may be flammable.
  2. An old existing liner that may be worn or damaged.
  3. Damaged or Cracked Clay and Terra Cotta Flue's.
  4. Old worn Chimney Bricks that have caused your Chimney Flue's to shift or lean.
  5. (Blockage) of one or more Flue's in your Chimney that may eventually shut your heating system down and allow Dangerous Carbon Monoxide gas into your home.

Why Use a Stainless Steel Chimney Liner?

A stainless steel chimney liner will make your chimney perform more safely and efficiently. A liner fits inside the chimney flue to protect the bricks and mortar from the soot and creosote created by fires. Many older homes do not have liners inside their chimneys.

Gases created by fires can corrode the chimney’s bricks and mortar, which is the cement-like material in the joints between the bricks that helps bind them together. These acidic gases can eat at the mortar joints. When the mortar is compromised it can lead to fires or dangerous carbon monoxide leaking into the home. Also, unlined chimneys can pose a safety hazard because creosote can build up on the sides of chimney. Creosote is flammable and if too much is present it can catch fire inside the chimney.

A stainless steel chimney liner is suitable for fireplaces and stoves that burn wood, gas or oil. Stainless is a good idea if you need to install or replace a chimney liner but don’t want to choose the expensive option of rebuilding a clay or terra cotta liner.

The stainless steel liner comes in flexible or rigid varieties. It is usually in the shape of a tube and is inserted in the existing chimney. The liner creates a new flue. Of the metals available, stainless steel is the most common. Some other metal chimney liners include titanium, which adds some resistance to heat and corrosion, or aluminum.

Stainless steel chimney liners resist corrosion, rusting and staining. The metal maintains its strength and structural integrity even in the high temperatures inside the chimney. They are also easy to clean and are inexpensive.
